Many of our corporate officers are nationally recognized experts in a variety of technical disciplines, and they have an average of over twenty years of management experience to ensure that Areté consistently delivers the right solution, at the right time, at an affordable cost.


Mr. David Kier, President and Chief Executive Officer
 
David Kier has joined Areté Associates as President and CEO, while continuing in his role as Chairman of the Board of Directors, a position he has held since 2004. Before joining Areté, Dave was a Vice President at a major defense contractor where he was responsible for managing a matrix organization of the missile defense activities, establishing programmatic strategy to best support the Missile Defense Agency and to capitalize on new business opportunities. After serving concurrently as the Deputy Director of the National Reconnaissance Office (NRO) and the Principle Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Air Force (SPACE) from May 1997 to August 2001, Dave retired from a 35-year career in the Federal Service. A native of Pennsylvania, Dave is a graduate of Washington and Jefferson College where he received a B. S. in Physics. He is also a graduate of the National War College in Washington, D.C. and the Program for Government Executives at the Kennedy School of Government from Harvard University. The recipient of numerous medals and awards during his career, Dave is one of a very few individuals to receive both the CIA's and the Intelligence Community's Distinguished Service Medal for technical and managerial accomplishments.
 
 
Dr. Curt Harkless, Executive Vice President, Phenomenology, Algorithms and Software
 

Dr. Curt Harkless has extensive experience in the areas of engineering management, image processing, pattern recognition, and interpretation of physical phenomena. He led the design, development, and real-time implementation of complex algorithms for fingerprint identification, and he has been awarded several patents describing the implementation of such algorithms. Dr. Harkless leads the Phenomenology, Algorithms and Software Division with major locations in Northridge, California, and Arlington, Virginia.

 
 
Mr. David Kane, Executive Vice President, Sensors, Sources and Systems
 

Mr. David Kane has over 23 years of experience in the design, development, and manufacture of airborne and space-based imaging and sensor systems. In addition to developing mission planning and ground-image exploitation stations, he has held a variety of systems engineering and program management positions. At Areté, he has played the lead systems role on major Department of Defense (DoD) reconnaissance programs. He also is in charge of other micro-photonics MEMS-based programs, such as the ongoing Afocal MEMS Beam Steering initiatives for IRCM and Laser BeamRider countermeasures. Mr. Kane leads the Sensor, Sources and Systems Division with a major location in Tucson, Arizona.

 
 
Mr. David Campion, Vice President
 

Mr. David Campion has an M.S. in Optical Engineering from the University of California, San Diego, and he has over 15 years experience in remote sensing, image processing, and application development. He has led several significant efforts that have resulted in transitioning unique capabilities to the intelligence community. Mr. Campion directs the California Operations in Northridge in the Phenomenology, Algorithms and Software Division.

 
 
Mr. Christopher Choi, Chief Financial Officer
 

Mr. Christopher Choi has over twenty years experience in the financial management of companies in both the defense and aerospace industries. Work experience includes Boeing Commercial Sales and Marketing, Gulfstream, and Applied Signal Technology (formerly Dynamics Technology). Mr. Choi has extensive background in financial analysis, system implementation, project management, and mergers and acquisitions.

 
 
Dr. Doug DeProspo, Vice President
 

Dr. Doug DeProspo leads the Arlington and Chantilly, Virginia locations of the Phenomenology, Algorithms and Software Division. With nearly 20 years of experience in technical management across a broad spectrum of R&D efforts, he is an expert in the application and physics-based interpretation of electro-optic, radar, acoustic and magnetic remote sensing. His major focus is directing the design, development and implementation of innovative capabilities to produce new sources and methods for the Intelligence and DoD communities.

 
 
Mr. John A. Lauder, Vice President, Intelligence & Homeland Security Programs
 
Mr. John A. Lauder has a B.A. from Hiram College and an M.A. in International Relations from Yale University. He is internationally recognized as a leading authority on Weapons of Mass Destruction, Nonproliferation, Arms Control, and Homeland Security. He retired from the federal government in the fall of 2004 with over 33 years of managerial, analytical, and policy experience in the Central Intelligence Agency, National Reconnaissance Office, and as an arms control negotiator. He has served as an active participant and leader of advisory panels to several government and private sector programs including a broadly focused interagency study to improve intelligence on weapons of mass destruction. He has been awarded the Distinguished Career Intelligence Medal, the Distinguished Intelligence Medal, the NRO Gold Medal, and the DCI's Director's Award for his leadership and innovation in collection systems, analytical approaches, and vital national security initiatives and decisions. Mr. Lauder oversees the application of Areté's capabilities and expertise to key national security needs from the Areté office in Chantilly, Virginia.
 
 
Dr. John McLean, Chief Technology Officer
 
Dr. John McLean, previously President and Chief Executive Officer of Areté Associates, has over 25 years of experience in developing new concepts, performing research, and managing the integration and delivery of advanced systems for the Department of Defense. Dr. McLean is a recognized expert in optical remote sensing of the ocean, and he holds several patents in passive and active remote sensing technologies.
 
 
Mr. Randy Potter, Chief Scientist
 

Mr. Randy Potter is the Chief Scientist at Aretè Associates, and he guides the development and exploitation of innovative and disruptive technologies for the company. He has extensive experience on a wide range of signal detection and pattern recognition principles. In addition to managing Areté innovation, he participates on numerous government panels and serves as senior adviser for several Navy programs. At Aretè, Mr. Potter also serves as the Ethics Program Director.

 
 
Dr. Philip Selwyn, Corporate Vice President for Strategic Development
 
Dr. Philip Selwyn served as Director of the Office of Naval Technology from 1983 to 1993, and he has over 35 years experience conducting, assessing, directing, and managing a broad spectrum of technology development programs. He is a nationally recognized authority on nonacoustic remote sensing of the ocean, including radar, infrared, optical, and magnetic sensing, and the associated signal and background physics and signal processing techniques. Based in Arlington, Virginia, Dr. Selwyn guides Areté's strategic investments, manages the company's patent and patent application portfolio, and serves as the focal point within the company for matters relating to Areté's activities as a small business.
 
 

Mr. Don Wurzel, Vice President, National Security Studies and Analysis Division

 

Mr. Don Wurzel has over 30 years experience in National Security Affairs. He joined Areté after retiring from the U.S. Navy in 1995. Since joining Areté, he has run the National Security Studies and Analysis Program, providing senior-level analysis, red teaming, CONOPS development, warfare-experimentation concept development, studies and analysis and simulation support to clients in the Department of Defense and the Intelligence Community. During a seven-month leave of absence, he also served as a senior member of the staff on the President’s Commission on the Intelligence Capabilities of the United States Regarding Weapons of Mass Destruction (the WMD Commission).
