Areté’s heritage in ocean remote sensing has led to the development of a rigorous and disciplined approach to solving exceptionally complex problems. Such problems often involve detection and characterization of weak signals, in heavy clutter, over a large area. Our disciplined approach to such problems involves:

• Rigorous understanding of target and background phenomenology (physics-based understanding) to define the exploitable signatures;
  
  
• Rigorous statistical hypothesis testing (algorithms and signal processing) to quantify the optimal probability of detection at the minimum false alarm rate;
  
  
• Rigorous understanding of the capabilities and limitations of current technology, and development of new technologies (innovation) to overcome such limitations;
  
  
• Rigorous engineering discipline to integrate the technologies (hardware) and algorithms (software) into an operational system;
  
  
• Rigorous field testing, to allow quantitative demonstrations of performance in an operational context; and
  
  
• Rigorous understanding of threats, missions, and current capabilities to identify how advanced technologies can address an operational need.

These disciplines are coupled with an ISO-certified production capability (SW, HW, and integrated systems), allowing Areté to deliver an operational solution to the end user. Our integrated capability to go from unique innovation to delivered operational capability provides our customers with robust comprehensive solutions to urgent mission requirements.

These capabilities are represented by the depth and breadth of experience of our employees. Academic disciplines are heavily concentrated in math, physical sciences, and engineering. Over half of our technical staff has advanced degrees. Areté practices a continuous recruiting strategy to attract the best and brightest in multiple disciplines, at all levels of experience. Our in-house capabilities are complemented by a strong team of specialist consultants and subcontractors.
